Spend Your Time at Home Wisely With DIY Home Improvements

Guest blogger this month Gabe Perkins created LittleMoneyBigHouse.com to share tips and advice based on what he has learned, tools for project planning, and hopefully, a little inspiration to keep people going when they hit a challenge.

After spending more time at home the last few years, it’s likely you’ve started to notice some wear and tear. Maybe the paint looks dull, your kitchen light fixtures really stand out as dated, or maybe your home could use a general refresh. Fortunately, there are plenty of fixes you can handle yourself to get your home back in shape. With that in mind, Dunsmuir Hardware shares some DIY projects you can take on at any time.

For Practicality

Of course, even the simplest DIY projects will require an investment of time and effort on your part. But if you use high-quality materials, these projects can significantly impact your home’s value. Make it worthwhile by choosing projects that are practical and functional. Perhaps you need extra storage units or shelf space, or maybe even want to get adventurous with careful yet easy bathroom remodels—the sky is the limit!

Many people are turning to projects that benefit remote work. For instance, you could revamp your home office so that it’s a more inviting and productive space in which to do business. If you're unhappy with the state of the furniture in your home office, you should spend a little money to invest in some new office furniture that brings this space a little joy. Just make sure you’re spending money on ergonomic pieces that will help you stay comfortable while you’re focusing on work.

For Safety

Few DIY home improvements are as worthwhile as those that guarantee your home and/or your family’s safety. And yes, you can definitely take measures to DIY home security. There are many home security systems that you can easily put up and monitor yourself, so you’re no longer at the mercy of professionally installed systems. Many of these simply connect to your home Wi-Fi and integrate with your gadgets, as well as include added features like detection of environmental hazards and control of thermostats and lights, to name a few.

You can also ramp up your home security efforts in non-technical and somewhat sneaky ways, as well. Getting a dog, for instance, is sure to deter burglars, but it’s just as effective to get an alarm system that makes barking sounds when triggered. Dummy security cameras and alarm system decals work just as well, too—to name a few.

Last but not least, if you decide that your kitchen could use a little remodeling, you can improve the air quality in your kitchen by installing a wall mount range hood. They come in plenty of different sizes and designs so there’s sure to be something to fit your decor.

For Aesthetics

Finally, as The Spruce suggests, there is nothing like DIY home projects that result in a home that’s more beautiful. More often than not, these can be as easy as finally doing long-overdue decluttering. For example, do you want to make one of your rooms appear more inviting? Try using removable wallpaper, which is available in a number of stunning patterns and designs. This will allow you to incorporate a bold new look without a lot of work.

Another great way to spruce up your home is to DIY home decor. This can be anything from reinventing specific spaces or crafting decorations that are as interesting as they are affordable, or giving your rooms a fresh coat of paint.

You can even take it outside by doing your landscaping yourself—while social distancing, of course. Not only will your yard look lovely, but MoneyCrashers also points out that investing in young plants will save money.

Indeed, there’s no better way to beat the boredom of spending more time at home than by working toward creating a more convenient and more beautiful home for yourself. And you don’t even need to call in professionals to do it for you. Who knows? You may even surprise yourself as you find that you do have the capacity to create and innovate.
