HOW TO USE PAINT AND TAPE TO CREATE WALL PATTERNS

LEVEL: EXPERIENCED

If you are looking to revamp the look of a room and want to do something outside the box, try painting patterns on your walls, doors, or furniture. All you need is the right paint, some paintbrushes, and Scotch Blue™ Painter’s Tape from 3M. Follow the simple steps below to create eye-catching designs, zigzags, and angled shapes on all kinds of interior surfaces.

Step 1: Choose a Pattern

Decide on a pattern with which to adorn your walls and other surfaces. You can create stripes, a chevron pattern, crisscrossing, zigzags—basically anything your imagination can come up with. Because Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape comes in various widths, you can create numerous types of eye-catching effects with your design.

Choose a color scheme. It is common to choose two shades of the same color, but you don’t have to limit yourself. For a bolder effect, try contrasting colors that complement one another.

Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace

Create a work area by laying drop cloths on the floor to protect it from spills and splatter. If you’re painting a wall, place the cloths so that they cover the floor just below the wall and use ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape to attach the drop cloths to the baseboard or bottom of the wall so that they don’t shift around while you’re painting. This reduces the chance of getting paint on your floor.

Safety Alerts!

Always paint in a well-ventilated area. Open the windows to make sure you will have proper ventilation.

Wear goggles, protective clothing, and gloves when painting.

Remove any loose paint or finish from the surface with a paint scraper or stiff brush and patch any imperfections. Sand rough or glossy areas, and then clean the surface with warm, soapy water and a cloth. Let the surface dry completely before painting.

Step 3: Paint a Base Coat

Apply a base coat of paint to the surface. Use a paintbrush or roller to apply a coat of True Value® EasyCare® Ultra Premium Interior Paint in the color of your choice. Allow the paint to dry completely for at least 24 hours before taping your pattern on the surface.

Step 4: Start Taping the Surface

Apply Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape to the surface in your desired pattern. In some cases, taping freehand might yield fine-looking results, but it is recommended that you plan, measure, and mark your pattern on the surface before taping. Use a ruler or yardstick and a pencil to trace your pattern on the wall beforehand so that it is consistent and level. You will achieve much better results this way.

Score the outer edge of the tape with your fingernail or a small knife so the paint will not bleed under the tape. Continue the process until you have masked all your design on the wall.

Step 5: Paint Second Color

Now, paint over your taped design. Use a small or medium-sized paintbrush or mini-roller to carefully apply EasyCare Ultra Premium Interior Paint in another color of your choice.

Helpful Tip

Two light coats of paint are usually better than one thick coat.

Great work! You have transformed your interior with a little paint, Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape, and a whole lot of creativity. Enjoy.
